8000 Series: Instruction

Policy 8000 Curriculum

The purpose of this policy is to provide a process to manage the curriculum by establishing the structure for curriculum design and implementation and a systematic basis for decision-making and standardized practice.

Policy 8010 Grading and Reporting: Pre-Kindergarten Through Grade 5

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines to ensure that information on grading, reporting, promotion, retention, and homework is determined in a clear and consistent manner, and is reported to students and their families through regular and timely communication that accurately reflects the student’s mastery of standards.

Policy 8020 Grading and Reporting: Middle and High School

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines to ensure that information on grading, reporting, promotion, retention, and homework is determined in a clear and consistent manner and reported to students and their families through regular and timely communication about student academic progress.

Policy 8030 Graduation Requirements

The purpose of this policy is to establish requirements for graduation from high school in the HCPSS that are consistent with the regulations of the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Policy 8040 Selection of Instructional Resources

The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures and criteria for the evaluation, selection, and review of instructional resources for use in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS).

Policy 8050 Teaching of Controversial Issues

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for the teaching of controversial issues.

Policy 8060 Resource Speakers

The purpose of this policy is to establish a framework for identifying and selecting resource speakers.

Policy 8070 Religion and Religious Materials

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines related to the inclusion of religion and religious materials in instruction and during school-related activities.

Policy 8080 Responsible Use of Technology, Digital Tools, and Social Media

The purpose of this policy is to define expectations for individuals regarding the responsible use of technology, digital tools, and social media for HCPSS-sponsored programs.

Policy 8090 Non-School-Hour Curricular Programs

The purpose of this policy is to establish appropriate guidelines for student participation in curricular activities during non-school hours.

Policy 8100 Field Trips

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines to plan, approve, and conduct student field trips off and on school grounds and within the United States.

Policy 8110 Student International Educational Travel

The Board of Education voted to rescind Policy 8110 Student International Educational Travel on July 12, 2018.

Policy 8120 Testing: State and Local Responsibilities and Protocols

This policy establishes provisions for how state-mandated, district-selected, and district-designed assessments are approved, secured, administered, and reported in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS).

Policy 8200 Digital Education

The purpose of this policy is to specify criteria for digital education courses in HCPSS which will provide students equitable access to instructional resources and utilize technology to individualize learning.
