The
World Languages program offers courses in:
- American Sign
Language
- Chinese
- French
- German
- Italian
- Latin
- Russian
- Spanish
Students may enroll in language courses at sequential
levels I-V. The middle school offers French and Spanish level I
as a two-year program.
In concert with significant
educational research in foreign language learning, the World
Languages program subscribes to a proficiency-based curriculum
which stresses goals that enable students to function in
real-life situations. The curriculum provides a framework for
achieving the established goals, while allowing teachers maximum
flexibility in planning and selection of techniques, strategies,
resources and materials. The guide establishes the foundation
for student success by integrating language functions,
linguistic forms, and cultural context.

STARTALK 2011 - a Chinese Summer Learning Camp for Grades 3-8
HCPSS has received a STARTALK grant to teach elementary and middle school students Chinese this summer. In collaboration with the BSAP Summer Camps, the Office of World Languages will offer two Chinese language camps: Starfish and More Under the Sea for grades 3-5 and Saving Our Bays and Oceans for grades 6-8. Students will explore marine topics, such as sea life, sea habitats, tides, waves, and conservation efforts, while learning Chinese.
STARTALK is a government initiative to increase the number of Americans learning critical needs languages. HCPSS is the only Maryland public school system to receive a STARTALK grant this year.
