HIV/AIDS Unit

Howard County public schools provide instruction on HIV/AIDS in grades four through ten including Special Education.

The Maryland State Board of Education requires that each school system provide instruction about the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) “at least once in grades three to six, six to nine, and nine to twelve” (COMAR 13A.04.18).

HIV/AIDS instruction may be included in a variety of content areas: Health Education, Science, Social Studies, and Family and Consumer Science. HIV/AIDS instruction is a required content area in the Health Education curriculum. It may be a required or elective topic in the other content areas. Parents may exclude their child from instruction in HIV/AIDS prevention by completing an HIV/AIDS Exclusion Form which is available through the school.

Notification Materials
Parents will receive notification materials in advance of the unit. All files are in PDF format.
