Resources to Support Children with Learning and Attention Challenges (LD/ADHD)

The HCPSS provides a system-wide approach to supporting its students who face learning and attention challenges. The following list of websites have been reviewed by the HCPSS LD/ADHD Design Team and provides resources to support children with learning and attention challenges meet their scholastic goals. The list* also contains a variety of websites appropriate for parents, students and educators.

Parent Resources

Note: The Design Team believes you will find the suggested websites helpful no matter what your children’s educational challenges may be.

  • Youth.gov – Provides information on topics related to youth.
  • Thinkport – Requires registration by its users. The website includes information and resources about education, careers, technology and family/community in Maryland.
  • MD Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene – Provides general health information with sections specific to developmental age groups.
  • NASP Fish-ful Thinking – Provides information for raising optimistic kids.
  • NASP Family Resources – Provides resources for academic behavior and social/emotional issues.
  • Maryland Learning Links – Provides resources for educators and families about issues related to early intervention and special education in Maryland.
  • LD Online-Parents – Provides articles about identifying learning challenges and other current topics. Also provides a variety of other parent resources related to supporting their child.
  • Reading Rockets-Parents – Provides a variety of reading and activity resources to help struggling readers build fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Student Resources

  • The Headroom – Aims to inform young people, their caregivers and service providers about positive mental health. Provides information in different web rooms: Cubby House – children 6-12 years old, Lounge -children aged 12-18 years old, Family Room – parents and friends, Kitchen – services providers and professionals.
  • Resilience for Teens – Got Bounce? – The American Psychological Association provides information to youth on how to build their own health and resilience. Resilience is the ability to adapt well in the face of hard times and is what makes some people seem like they have “got bounce” while others do not.
  • Mindzone – Cope, Care, Deal – Provides mental health information for teens from how to cope with everyday stress to how to handle more severe mental health problems.
  • KidsHealth – Provides articles and information for kids and teens on how they can keep themselves healthy and happy. Being healthy means dealing with the changes in your body and your mind. This site has resources for parents, kids and teens.
  • Half of Us – Provides a public dialogue to raise awareness about the prevalence of mental health issues on campus and connect students to the appropriate resources to get help.
  • LD Online-Kids – Provides web sections for kids to submit their stories or artwork. Also provides book lists related to learning challenges for various age levels.

Educator Resources

  • Ed – Provides research supported academic practices on doing what works.
  • The National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention – Highlights resources for social and emotional development and learning, including a list of articles and publications available on-line.
  • The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) – Promotes the social and emotional development and school readiness of young children birth to age 5. Provides a variety of tools and resources for teachers, parents and caregivers.
  • The National School Climate Center – Works with educators, parents, schools, and communities to promote academic achievement and prevent youth violence and other at-risk behaviors by fostering effective social and emotional education and character education for children and adolescents.
  • Find Youth Information – Provides a resource to find topics related to youth.

  • What Works Clearinghouse – Provides educators with information about various evidence-based, educational strategies/programs based on reviews of the current research.
  • Maryland Learning Links – Provides resources for educators and families about issues related to early intervention and special education in Maryland.
  • LD Online-Educators – Provides instructional strategies for teaching students, articles on various teaching issues and other current topics.
  • Reading Rockets-Teachers – Offers reading strategies, lessons and activities to help struggling readers build fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills.
  • FCRR – Florida Center for Reading Research – Provides reviews of both teacher-led and computer-based programs that can be used to provide instruction in reading for all students. The reports contain a description of the program and its potential uses (e.g., general instruction, supplemental instruction, interventions) as well as an evaluation of the current research support for the program.
