English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
English for Speakers of Other
Languages (ESOL) is an appropriate assistance program for Kindergarten to Grade 12 students who come from a background where the
dominant language is other than American English. Their
proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, or writing the
English language is such that they would benefit from an ESOL
program of instruction.
The ESOL curriculum merges content
and language development. Students develop their language and
literacy skills while acquiring content knowledge. Objectives
for listening, speaking, and language skill development define
the communicative part of the ESOL program. Objectives from
language arts, science and social studies help focus ESOL
instruction on what students need to know in order to succeed in
the academic program. By combining content and language
instruction, the ESOL program strives to build cognitive
academic skills, as well as the basic ESOL skills of listening,
speaking, reading and writing in order to accelerate learning
for all English language learners. Read more...
